Workplace compassion in healthcare

Compassion is a core value embedded in the concept of quality in healthcare in the UK and other healthcare systems. Usually, the focus is on ensuring compassionate staff attitudes and behaviours towards service users and families. Rarely has the prime concern related to the need for compassion towards staff, though greater understanding of the importance of this is emerging.  For example, compassion towards staff plays an important part in staff health and well-being and ultimately, affects the ability of nurses to provide compassionate care for patients. This presentation will explore the idea of workplace compassion and what this looks like and is experienced.  It will consider ways to support workplace compassion and the implications for leaders and managers in healthcare settings.
